Program Areas
The Foundation supports organizations that provide services and solutions for:
- Developmentally Disabled Adults and Children
- Life skills and vocational training
- Residential group homes
- Employment
- Day services
- After school programs
- Therapeutic services
- Abused or Neglected Youth
- Residential group homes
- Emancipating foster youth
- Therapeutic, social, and educational services
- Institutionalized or incarcerated youth
- Domestic violence Family preservation
The Foundation distinguishes between abused or neglected youth and at-risk or disadvantaged youth. The Foundation funds organizations that provide services to youth who are living in out-of-home placement or there is a pending threat of out-of-home placement, or victims of domestic violence.
Types of Support
The Foundation makes grants for the following:
- Core programming: new, expanding, or sustaining.
- Capital expenditures: improvements, equipment, and vehicles.
Grant Range
The Foundation’s grants range from $5,000 to $20,000. The average grant is $15,000. Grants to new organizations are usually $10,000 for the first year.
An organization may apply for and receive a grant annually, for up to three consecutive years. Thereafter, it must refrain from applying for at least one year.
Eligibility
To be considered for a grant from the John Gogian Family Foundation, organizations must:
- Provide a copy of their IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status verification letter with IRS indication that you are not a private foundation.
- Be physically located in Los Angeles County and provide services to adults and/or children within Los Angeles County.
- Provide an independent audited financial statement if the organization’s annual income is $2 million or more. If the organization’s annual income is $1 million or more, but less than $2 million, either an independent audited financial statement or an independent financial compilation is required.
- Be non-sectarian. A religiously affiliated group may operate a program, but participation must be open to anyone and be non-discriminatory. The service delivery must be free of worship or religious teaching.
- Not discriminate in hiring staff or providing services on the basis of race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, sex, or disability.
Evaluation Criteria
The Foundation uses the following criteria in making its selections for funding:
- Programmatic Fit. Does the request fit the Foundation’s guidelines and stated program objectives? Does the project help to further the Foundation’s mission and vision?
- Evidence of need. The Foundation targets organizations that are financially sustainable and are well managed.
- Ability to achieve an impact.
- Innovative and high-quality programs.
- Preference for smaller or community-based organizations that may not be as able to obtain funding through traditional sources.
Community Grants Program
The Foundation’s Community Grants Program permits the Founder and Directors to recommend modest grants for funding. Generally these grants are for activities in the communities where the Founder and Directors live, and for programs in which they take an active interest or have an established connection. Applications or requests are not accepted for this program.
